France: In Or Out?

Marine Le Pen either just cost herself the French Presidency or secured victory in her April 24 runoff against Emmanuel Macron.

"As soon as the Russian-Ukrainian war is over and has been settled by a peace treaty, I will call for the implementation of a strategic rapprochement between NATO and Russia," Le Pen told a news conference packed with international reporters.

Coupled with her pledge to withdraw France from NATO's integrated military command, a commitment to “rapprochement” with Russia might appeal to her base but alienate others less enamored of Russia after Putin's Ukrainian war.

With Le Pen trailing Macron already, it remains to be seen if her rhetoric is sufficient to close the back.

Making the central question of the runoff election whether or not France will be in or out of NATO come May 1.
